Villarte Chicago
In the Summer of 2006, Enlace Chicago funded arts programming in the Little Village neighborhood as part of the Quality of Life Plan. Organizers hoped to celebrate the success of the programs with an evening recognizing grantees. Then, they thought bigger - a 2 day art walk composed of pop-up galleries that showcased the art of Little Village residents across mediums and skill levels. From teens doing graffiti to recent MFA grads with complex installations to grandmothers displaying crochet tablecloths, The Little Village Arts Festival gave everyone the opportunity to express themself.
And the City of Chicago took notice.
Everyone wanted to know “How can there be art in Little Village, a neighborhood known for gang violence?”
Now, eighteen years later, the response from local residents, business owners, educators and the City of Chicago is “When is the next festival? What can I do to be a part of it? The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs has recognized The Little Village Arts Festival as part of Chicago Artist Month and has chosen it as a Featured Event during this month twice in 7 years. This endorsement has drew additional visitors and support for other artistic and community endeavors within the Little Village community and directly impacted our growing number of visitors each year.
The festival expanded to include workshops, Day of the Dead Altars and musical and theatrical performances. It ran for 16 years before taking a 2 year hiatus. The festival relaunched in 2024.
